Postdoctoral Fellowship – All Our Nations Language Revitalization Hub

Position Summary 

The post doc fellow will be influential in building the All Our Nations Language Revitalization Hub at Fort Lewis College. The Hub activities, funded for three years, will hold a summer language institute featuring courses in four Native languages, a nine-month online Native language pedagogy class, and a certificate in language revitalization design. Native American students, who make up 36% of the student body, are involved in every element of the building of the Hub. This post doc will work with student interns and Hub personnel to assist with the design of the summer language program, development of the online pedagogy class, and help develop the curriculum for the Native American Revitalization program design certificate. The person in this position will also be expected to teach one to two classes a year in NAIS and Sociology related to Native issues and language revitalization. While in-person is preferred, applicants who are remote may be considered. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Ph.D. in a field related to Native/Indigenous Languages or Native American and Indigenous Studies  
  • Passion and Interest in language revitalization  
  • All applicants should be prepared to teach both lower-division and upper-division courses in sociology and Native American and Indigenous Studies  
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary, collaborative setting  
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as experience working with Indigenous communities  

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level   
  • Experience teaching a Native language at a college level  
  • Knowledge of possible efforts to combine language work with the United Nations’ Decade of the Mother Tongue   

 

Major Responsibilities 

  • Teach 1 to 2 courses on Native language revitalization and/or a Native language per semester 
  • Collaborate with Hub personnel to develop curricula for all aspects of Hub activities 
  • Participate with Hub personnel to develop Indigenous based assessment tools 
  • Conduct Indigenous based program assessment 
  • Develop internships and partnerships in Native language revitalization 
  • Research on-going activities/programs/pedagogy related to language revitalization 
  • Develop a current library of language revitalization efforts across Turtle Island 
  • Collaborate with Hub personnel and students to develop Mukutu archive of Hub activities 
  • Help plan Native language programs 
  • Maintain knowledge and awareness of digital accessibility including the American with Disabilities Act and Section 508 
  • Produce and remediate digitally accessible materials in accordance with FLC standards 
  • Perform other duties as assigned 
  • Optional related summer program work with additional remuneration 

 

Optional Summer Work 

Help organize the All our Kin Summer language program for additional remuneration.

Compensation  

The salary for this position is 52,000/yr plus a comprehensive benefits package. The position is funded for three years by the Mellon foundation.
