Concert – European premiere of Raven Chacon’s Voiceless Mass: A concert with works by Raven Chacon and Elina Waage Mikalsen
June 7th – 18:00 Bodø Domkirke

Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, in collaboration with Arktisk Filharmoni and Bodø 2024, is proud to present a unique concert in Bodø Cathedral featuring Raven Chacon’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composition, Voiceless Mass, as part of the exhibition, Raven Chacon: A Worm’s Eye View from a Bird’s Beak.
Accompanying his first solo museum exhibition in Europe at Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum in Tromsø, Raven Chacon will come to Bodø/Buvvda/Bådåddjo for the performance of his compositions, Voiceless Mass and Biyán. The concert programme will also feature an extended improvisational set by Elina Waage Mikalsen.
This is the premiere performance of Chacon’s award-winning work in Europe. Chacon’s Voiceless Mass (2021) was a site-specific commission for the annual Thanksgiving concert hosted by Present Music at The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was composed specifically for the organ at the cathedral, and it uses the space of the church, an institution that has played a crucial role in the extinguishing of Native American culture to consider that legacy and how it reverberates in the present. Performing the piece in Bodø/Buvvda/Bådåddjo draws parallels between Sámi and global Indigenous experiences, strengthening the links and networks of solidarity that can lead to empowered Indigenous futures.
The performance of Voiceless Mass will be accompanied by another of Chacon’s works, Biyán. Biyán takes its title from the Navajo word for ‘song’. In Chacon’s own words, moments of the composition repeat in the same way that a song might repeat if it were to be sung all night.

Concert – Transjoik featuring Yuliyana Krivoshapkina and Radik Tyulyush
June 8th – 19:00-20:30 Stormen Concert Hall

We are so fortunate to be joined by Transjoik, the well-known Norwegian jazz/world band with over 20 years of experience! What happens on stage when the musicians come together is always new and improvisational. At the same time, we somehow know exactly what they have in store; the special experience, the way they use their voices, the Sámi yoik; all of which impress us again and again! Frode Fjellheim and Snorre Bjerck lead the way, together with partners Torbjørn Hillersøy (bass) and Ronni Tekrø (guitar). The musicians in Transjoik are always curious about new voices and have the whole world as their catchment area, which gives the audience unique experiences. For this concert, they welcome throat singer Radik Tyulyush (Huun Huur Tu) from Tuva and Yuliyana Krivoshapkina from Sakha/Yakutsia as guests. The tickets each 395 NOK each (about $35.83).

Bodø Airport has a range of national and international flights and is an easy gateway to Bodø and the surrounding region.
From Oslo (the capital of Norway), it only takes 80 minutes to get to Bodø Airport. The airport is located 1.2 km from the city, so many choose to walk the short distance to the center.
Bodø Airport has daily connections to Oslo (Gardermoen, OSL), Trondheim (Værnes), Bergen (Flesland), Tromsø and Lofoten. SAS, Norwegian, Widerøe, and Finnair have regular flights to Bodø Airport.
By train
Nordlandsbanen, one of the world’s most beautiful train routes, winds its way 730 km northward from Trondheim to Bodø.
Bodø Station is the northern end station of the Nordland Railway, and is located in Bodø city center. The station is served by long-distance traffic to Trondheim, regional traffic to Mo i Rana and Mosjøen, and local traffic to Fauske and Rognan.
Book tickets at vy.no
Long-distance traffic
There are two long-distance trains between Bodø and Trondheim each day, one day train and one night train. The travel time varies somewhat, with day trains taking around 9 hours and 50 minutes, while the travel time for night trains is about 20 minutes shorter, as they stop at fewer stations.
Regional traffic
There are two regional trains between Bodø and Mosjøen Station daily in both directions, in addition to the long-distance traffic’s two daily departures. This train journey takes around 3 hours and 50 minutes.
Local traffic
The local traffic between Bodø – Fauske and Rognan, consists of eight daily departures from Bodø to the neighboring towns of Fauske and Rognan, of which half of them stop at Fauske Station. The route, under the name Saltenbanen, runs from Bodø Station to the Mørkved neighborhood in Ytrebyen, the village of Tverlandet, the village of Valnesfjord, Fauske and Rognan Stations.
By sea – Hurtigruten coastal route
Hurtigruten, also known as the Norwegian Coastal Express, stops in Ørnes and Bodø in the Salten region before continuing to Lofoten. The northbound route stops in Ørnes in the morning and Bodø at midday, while the southbound route stops in Bodø and Ørnes in the middle of the night or early morning.
You can find the schedule for the Hurtigruten on their website.
The Hurtigruten terminal is located in the center of Bodø, opposite the train station.
By car
With a car, you can reach Bodø and Salten along the E6 highway or the scenic Coastal Route.
The car journey between Trondheim and Bodø takes approximately 10 hours (about 700 km).
The E6 European route is the longest and most important road in Nordland county, running through the county from South to North. The National Road 80 is the road connection between Bodø and E6 at Fauske. County Road 17 is the Coastal Route from Steinkjer through Ytre Helgeland to Bodø.
The 650 km long Coastal Route is a popular “detour” for those visiting the region. Here, you can follow the impressive coastal landscape and take small detours along the way, for example to Svartisen in Meløy, the church site in Gildeskål, or to Saltstraumen.

Soptsestimmie, which means “storytelling” or “conversation” in Southern Sami, is an initiative led by researchers aiming to address current questions related to the Sami reindeer herding community’s struggle to defend their historical habitats, practices, values, knowledge, and worldview. The goal is to connect these experiences to indigenous struggles in other parts of the world. The event aims to explore how academia can actively combat colonial injustice and create a space for action at the intersection of art, knowledge, solidarity, and activism. Music, art, and culture will play a central role in conveying these themes throughout the three evenings of the event.

ARCTIC STORYWORLDS: FROZEN MATTERS The International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA) invites you to the Arctic StoryWorlds: Frozen Matters exhibition opening at Siggeruds Galleri.
Curated by Olga Zaslavskaya, Vera Kuklina, and Tatiana Degai, the exhibition is a journey into the heart of the Arctic environment, using storytelling as a medium to convey the intricate tapestry of this region. StoryWorlds hints at a multi-layered, interconnected universe of narratives that may illuminate various facets of Arctic life, from its Indigenous cultures to the extraordinary biodiversity in this frozen realm. The phrase “Frozen Matters” goes beyond simply acknowledging the Arctic’s cold conditions; it intends to delve deeply into the pivotal elements that define this unique environment. Using “Matters,” the project declares its commitment to exploring and highlighting the significance of the Arctic. This exploration extends beyond the physical attributes of frozen landscapes to encompass environmental dynamics, cultural richness, scientific exploration, and even symbolic interpretations that might arise from the stark beauty of the Arctic.
The Arctic StoryWorlds: Frozen Matters project is a collaborative undertaking, bringing together scholars’ expertise, artists’ creativity, and Indigenous knowledge-holders’ wisdom. This collective effort is a dynamic process that unfolds through various means, including art-science convergence meetings, immersive field studies, artsbased collaborations, talking circles, and crafty storytelling.
This exhibition will be open between 29 May and 8 June 2024.
