Apply by October 15 for a 2026-2027 Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art at the Smithsonian

 

Applications are invited for the Betsy James Wyeth Fellowship in Native American Art, 2026-2027, a one-year residential opportunity at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) and the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) that seeks to foster new scholarship on Native art of the United States.

 

The proposed independent project will focus on historic or contemporary Native American artists, designers, and makers, and center Indigenous methodologies, knowledges, and communities. The recipient will be jointly advised by staff members at SAAM and NMAI and provided with access to both museums’ collections. One fellowship will be awarded to a predoctoral researcher for a 12-month term or to a postdoctoral or senior-level researcher for a 9-month term. Residencies must take place between June 1, 2026, and August 31, 2027. Housing is not provided. The stipend of $53,000 with a research allowance of up to $5,000.
