Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Dean, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Director, New Jersey Center for Indigenous Justice is the point of contact for fundraising, events, and gatherings that highlight and contextualize the unique questions facing Montclairā€™s Indigenous students and NJā€™s tribal communities. The Director, NJCIJ designs and manages the Centerā€™s diverse activities by working with NAIS faculty to establish annual goals and priorities and coordinates collaborative projects and activities with NJ tribal communities. The Director leads NAIS-related public programs on campus including the organization of events on current issues in Native American studies, student focused programs, as well as an annual conference focused on the preservation and celebration of Native American culture and sovereignty. The Director works with NAIS faculty to co-direct the annual summer Field School. The Director will also supervise the Center staff which will include a Digital Repository Specialist and a Graduate Assistant.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute annual goals and objectives for the NJCIJ in consultation with NAIS faculty co-coordinators.
  • Establish contact and develop evolving, responsive connections with the New Jersey tribal community leaders to ensure that the work of the NJCIJ is informed by and aligned with tribal priorities.
  • Lead fundraising efforts for the Center including establishing an annual schedule for seeking grant opportunities, preparing grant applications, and meeting with potential donors.
  • Participate in monthly meetings with the NJ Commission on American Indian Affairs, as well as other relevant conferences and gatherings across the state and region.
  • Manage on-campus events focused on understanding and celebrating the Indigenous heritage.
  • Develop and oversee field trip opportunities for MSU students and staff to visit tribal spaces and events.
  • Co-direct the NAIS Summer Field School in conjunction with NAIS faculty.
  • Lead regular meetings with NAIS faculty and serve as the university liaison for the NAIS student organization on behalf of Montclair State University.
  • Supervise the Centerā€™s staff and oversee the Centerā€™s office and research spaces. Manage the Centerā€™s budget
  • Produce annual reporting on NJCIJ activities to be submitted to the CHSS Dean, Provost, and University President
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Management retains the right to change or add job duties at any time.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:Ā 

  • Masterā€™s degree from an accredited university in a humanities field with a focus on Native American and Indigenous Studies (such as Anthropology, History, Ethnic Studies, Religion, English, or any other related field).
  • Minimum four (4) years of professional experience working with Indigenous communities.
  • Dynamic and inspirational leader; collaborative leadership style and the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and administrative colleagues.
  • Commitment to a shared governance decisionā€making model.
  • Successfully demonstrated administrative leadership, including budget and personnel experience, bolstered by strategic thinking and action.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills as the public face and primary spokesperson for the Center;
  • A commitment to supporting excellence and innovation in teaching/learning, scholarship and research, and community engagement among faculty and students;
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility to staff and students in support of their academic success and wellā€being.
 

PREFERRED:

  • Ph.D. in an NAIS-informed program of study from an accredited college or university.
  • Commitment to supporting excellence and innovation in teaching/learning, scholarship and research, and community engagement among faculty and students;
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and accessibility to staff and students in support of their academic success and wellā€being.
  • Strong program development and event planning skills.
  • Successful fundraising outcomes, including from granting agencies as well as private foundations and donors.
  • Experience interfacing with the press, as well as designing and delegating social media strategy to promote program goals.
