The Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA) is pleased to present a call for nominations for three prizes. Winners will be announced at the NAISA 2023 annual conference, held May 11-13, 2023, in Tkaronto/Toronto. For any questions, please contact

Prize categories include:
Best 2022 First Book in Native American and Indigenous Studies
NAISA Council welcomes nominations for the best first scholarly book published in 2022 by one or two authors on any topic related to Native American and Indigenous Studies. Edited volumes will not be considered. Authors must be registered NAISA members and in the case of co-authored books, both must be first-time authors. Publishers, presses, editors, universities, and authors are welcome to submit their works. To be considered for an award, publishers or authors should: 1) Write to

The 2022 First Book Prize Committee will be composed of three members: Jeani O’Brien, University of Minnesota; Lloyd Lee, University of New Mexico; and Jamaica Heolimeleikalani Osorio, University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa. The Prize Committee will determine the winner(s) by May 1, 2023, and the winner(s) will be announced at the NAISA 2023 annual conference, which will be held May 11-13, 2023, in Tkaronto/Toronto.
Best 2022 Subsequent Book in Native American and Indigenous Studies
The Council of NAISA welcomes nominations for the best subsequent scholarly book (can be the second book or beyond) published in 2022, by one or two authors on any topic related to Native American and Indigenous Studies. Edited volumes will not be considered. All authors must be registered NAISA members with at least one of the authors having previously published. Publishers, presses, editors, universities, and authors are welcome to submit their works. To be considered for an award, publishers or authors should: 1) Write to

The Best 2022 Subsequent Book Prize Committee will be composed of Shannon Speed, UCLA; Bonita Lawrence, York University; and Torjer Olsen, UiT The Arctic University of Norway (additional committee member to be announced soon). The Prize Committee will determine the winner(s) by May 1, 2023, and the winner(s) will be announced at the NAISA 2023 annual conference, which will be held May 11-13, 2023, in Tkaronto/Toronto.
Most Thought-Provoking 2022 Article in Native American and Indigenous Studies
The NAISA Council welcomes nominations for the best article in Native American and Indigenous Studies on any topic related to the field published in a scholarly journal or an edited volume/anthology in calendar year 2022. Both single and multiple-authored articles are eligible for nomination. Articles published in NAIS journal are automatically considered for the prize. Publishers, presses, editors, universities, and authors are welcome to submit their works. To be considered for an award, 1) Send a PDF of the article on or before January 1, 2023, to NAISA Council member

The Most Thought-Provoking 2022 Article Prize Committee will be composed of four members: Christine DeLucia, Williams College; Katrina Philips, Macalaster College; Christopher Pexa, University of Minnesota; and Doug Kiel, Northwestern University. The Prize Committee will determine the winner(s) by May 1, 2023, and the winner(s) will be announced at the NAISA 2023 annual conference, which will be held May 11-13, 2023, in Tkaronto/Toronto.
