Job Description:

 

Teach lower division courses in Comparative Ethnic Studies and Africana Studies/Black Studies/African American Studies to a diverse student population.

 

Teaching assignments may include day, evening, Saturday, face-to-face, online (synchronous or asynchronous), hybrid, honors, and/or dual enrollment.

 

Instruct and assist in the retention and success of a diverse student population through careful preparation of course materials, sound teaching methodologies, and critical pedagogies that are particularly effective with students of color and first-generation college students.

 

Contribute to department service, including but not limited to participating in department meetings, curriculum development and maintenance, extra-curricular programming, capacity building, and department promotion.

 

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, division, college, and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

 

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

 

Participate in formulating Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

 

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department and division meetings.

 

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.

 

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college, and division policies in performing duties.

 

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

 

Develop culturally relevant course content, culturally responsive pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or are students who are historically underserved. The ideal candidate should have experience in this area with African Americans, Latinxs, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and other disproportionately impacted students.

 

Work cooperatively with staff and students, including the UMOJA program.

 

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Master’s in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies

 

OR

 

Master’s in Ethnic Studies

 

OR

 

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area;

 

OR

 

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Desirable Qualifications:

 

Recent experience effectively teaching Ethnic Studies and/or Africana Studies/Black Studies/African American Studies courses in higher education.

 

Master’s degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies OR Bachelor’s degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies AND master’s degree in Ethnic Studies OR the equivalent.

 

Demonstrated commitment to the discipline of Ethnic Studies through involvement in academic, professional, and/or community organizations and activities.

 

Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with Black and African American, Latinx, Indigenous, Native Americans, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and/or other underserved communities.

 

Demonstrated sensitivity to working with community college students of diverse ages, genders, sexual orientations, religions, and racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, including those with physical and learning disabilities.

 

Willingness to examine and remediate one’s teaching and mentorship practices to more effectively engage and support racially marginalized and other disproportionately impacted students.

 

Knowledge of and/or experience using various effective classroom technologies, including previous training and/or certification in online instruction.

 

Experience with creative course design, instruction, and evaluation, including service learning and/or project-based learning.

 

Knowledge and application of the major epistemological considerations informing the discipline, including disciplinary histories, contributing theories and methods, major departures and paradigm shifts, and pedagogical approaches.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Salary Range: $84,277 - $126,482 Annually

Special Instructions Summary: Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with the faculty collective bargaining agreement and is not negotiable.
