GETTING TO & AROUND TEMUKO/TEMUCO

Important remark: We recommend that you purchase your Santiago-Temuco (round trip) tickets separately from your international flight reservation (information on local airlines provided below). This is advisable since purchasing your flights separately will likely make the cost cheaper. If using institutional funding, you can buy the Santiago-Temuco ticket on your own and then request reibursement for this portion of your trip. 

NAISA 2026 will take place on the San Francisco Campus of the Universidad Católica de Temuco (UCT), in Temuco–in Mapudungun (the Mapuche language), Temuko. Temuco, a city of  282,415, is located in what is now known as the Araucanía Region, in southern Chile. Here are some important tips for your trip, as well as information regarding your safety and well-being during your stay. 

TRAVELING TO TEMUKO

International Flights: 

  • Temuco can be reached by air or by land from Santiago, Chile.
  • To reach Temuco by air from anywhere in the world, you first need to arrive at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL), https://www.nuevopudahuel.cl/. There, complete customs procedures at Passport Control/Control Migratorio (Immigration and International Police, PDI), presenting your passport (and visa, if applicable). * Customs will provide you a PDI (Policia de Investigaciones de Chile) ticket to exempt you from tourist taxes at hotels (present it to your hotel when you check in). This ticket will also allow you to exit the country. Please keep this ticket in a safe place with your passport.
  • If you have checked baggage, you must collect it from the Baggage Claim area after you pass through Passport Control. 
  • Everyone must complete their registration with the SAG (Agricultural and Livestock Service). You can complete this once you are at the airport where there is free Wi-Fi available. To access the SAG form, scan with your phone the QR code posted in the hallway towards Passport Control. On this form, you must declare if you are bringing food, vegetables, seeds, meat, etc. Chile has a very strict policy regarding the entry of these products.

TRAVELING FROM SANTIAGO TO TEMUCO

Option #1: By plane. Santiago (SCL) -Temuco (ZCO), Domestic Flight

  • This is obviously the fastest option (approximately 1 hour flight).
  • A round-trip ticket from Santiago to Temuco can cost around USD 100. It will cost less if you buy it in advance of your travel date.
  • A highly recommended option is to purchase your Santiago-Temuco (round trip) tickets separately from your international flight reservation. This is advisable since purchasing your flights separately can make the cost cheaper. For this, go directly to the websites of the following local airlines: 

-LATAM (https://www.latamairlines.com/us/en); 

-Sky Airlines (https://www.skyairline.com/en/unitedstates); or, 

-JetSMART (https://jetsmart.com/cl/es/). 

You will need to collect your luggage after customs and then proceed to the domestic terminal. If you purchase your domestic flight separately from your international flight, it is likely that this flight will not include checked baggage. Please be aware of this. Also, if you have purchased your Santiago-Temuco flight separately and need to collect your luggage, it is recommended that you allow a 4-hour window to complete all the procedures in the international area for domestic flights. International flights arrive at Terminal 2. You will need to walk approximately 10-15 minutes to Terminal 1, where domestic flights depart. Customs procedures can take a significant amount of time due to the overlap of international flight arrivals at certain times.

  • If you purchased a package flight from your point of origin to Temuco, your luggage should already be tagged for Temuco. This will speed up the process, but still allow approximately 3 hours between the arrival of your international flight and the departure of your domestic flight. However, we suggest you double-check that your luggage is marked for Temuco to be sure and then simply follow the instructions for "Domestic Connections" (vuelos nacionales). 
  • The flight to Temuco arrives at La Araucanía Airport (ZCO) in Freire, located 24 kilometers south of Temuco. To get to downtown Temuco or the Avenida Alemania area, you can:

* Take a shared shuttle. Approximately 30-40 minutes to downtown Temuco. Estimated price: 8,000-13,000 Chilean pesos (US$9-14).

* Take a taxi or private transfer. Estimated price: 20,000-30,000 Chilean pesos (US$22-32).

Option 2: Ground transportation, by interregional bus (Santiago-Temuco)

  • This is a cheaper option, but slower. The bus takes approximately 8 to 9 hours.
  • You can review options on the following website: https://www.recorrido.cl/en
  • If you decide to take the bus anyway, and you're coming from Santiago airport, here's what you should do after collecting your luggage and passing through the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG):

-Leave the airport and take a shuttle bus to the Santiago Bus Terminal (Alameda 3850, Estación Central).

-The shuttle buses to Santiago Bus Terminal are CentroPuerto (https://www.centropuerto.cl) or Turbus Aeropuerto (https://aeropuerto.turbus.cl/#/).

-These buses make several stops before arriving at the bus terminal.

-This service costs 2000 Chilean pesos, 3 dollars, and you can pay in cash or by card.

-Another option is to take a transfer or taxi from the airport to the Santiago bus terminal. There are several options available, which you can view just before leaving the airport.

-Once you are at the Santiago bus terminal, you will have several options to travel by bus, but we recommend: Eme Bus, Transantin, Buses Jac, ETM, Nar Bus, Cruz del Sur.

  •  Bus fares range from 20,000 to 50,000 Chilean pesos (US$22-52), depending on whether you prefer a semi-sleeper seat. Semi-sleeper (medium recline, more economical) or  a Premium Sleeper (more recline and comfort).
  • You can purchase a bus ticket in advance.  Tickets are sold on websites such as recorrido.cl, kupos.cl, or you can buy directly on the bus companies' websites: Turbus, ETM, JAC, Narbus, TranSantin, Jet Sur. You can also buy bus tickets at the bus terminal.
  • The bus will arrive at the Terminal Rodoviario de la Araucanía (Vicente Pérez Rosales 1609, Temuco).
  • From the Temuco bus terminal you can take a taxi or use Uber or a similar app to get to your accommodation.

Option #3: Ground transportation, by car 

  • You can rent a car at Santiago airport. The trip takes approximately 6 to 8 hours. The road is very safe and in good condition.

IF YOU DECIDE TO STOP IN SANTIAGO

  • If for any reason you stay in Santiago before or after the conference, make sure that you take an official taxi (“taxi oficial”) from the SCL airport to your hotel. These services have offices near the Baggage Claim area (Official Transportation/Transporte Oficial). For your safety, do not leave this area without having purchased a ticket from one of the official taxi companies.
  • If you book a hotel in Santiago, we recommend staying in hotels located in the Providencia district, or in the Lastarria or Bellas Artes neighborhoods (these last two areas are adjacent to downtown Santiago), where you will be in safe areas. Always check with your hotel about safety protocols you should follow within the city, especially at night.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT TEMUCO AND LHC CONTACT

  • Most stores accept credit and debit cards. However, we recommend using cash for buses, taxis, and purchases at smaller shops.
  • There are several car rental companies at Temuco airport.
  • Make sure to check if you need a visa to enter Chile, which will depend depending on the country you are traveling from.

Nota relevante: Recomendamos comprar los pasajes de avión de Santiago a Temuco (ida y vuelta) por separado de la reserva de su vuelo internacional (encontrará información sobre las aerolíneas locales en este documento). Esto es recomendable ya que comprar los vuelos por separado le resultará más económico. Si utiliza fondos institucionales, puede comprar el ticket Santiago-Temuco por su cuenta, y luego solicitar el reembolso de este tramo del viaje.

NAISA 2026 tendrá lugar en el campus San Francisco de la Universidad Católica de Temuco, en Temuco–en Mapudungun (lengua Mapuche), Temuko–. Temuco es una ciudad ubicada en lo que actualmente se denomina region de La Araucanía, en el sur de Chile. Posee actualmente una población de alrededor de 282.415 habitantes. Aquí les entregamos algunas importantes indicaciones para su viaje y también en relación con su cuidado y seguridad durante su estadía.

VIAJANDO A CHILE 

Vuelos Internacionales:

  • Para llegar a Temuco vía aérea y desde cualquier parte del mundo se necesita, primero, llegar al Aeropuerto Internacional Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL), Santiago, Chile (https://www.nuevopudahuel.cl/)
  • Allí, en el Aeropuerto Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL), realizará los trámites de aduana, en Control Migratorio/Passport Control (Migración y Policía Internacional, PDI). Allí debe presentar pasaporte (y la visa, si corresponde). * La aduana le entregará un ticket o comprobante de la PDI (Policía de Investigaciones de Chile), el cual le permitirá eximirse del pago de impuestos turísticos en los hoteles (preséntelo en su hotel al registrarse). Asimismo, este comprobante le permitirá salir del país. Por favor, guarde este ticket en un lugar seguro junto con su pasaporte.
  • Si trae equipaje registrado debes hacer el retiro luego de haber pasado Control Migratorio. 
  • Todas las personas deben completar su registro de control ante el SAG (Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero). Esto lo puedes completar una vez que estés en el aeropuerto, donde hay red Wi-Fi gratis disponible. Para acceder al formulario de SAG, escanea con tu teléfono el código QR posteado en el pasillo hacia Control Migratorio. En este formulario debe declarar si trae alimentos, vegetales, semillas, carnes, etc. Chile tiene una política de ingreso de estos productos muy estricta. 

VIAJANDO SANTIAGO-TEMUCO

Opción 1: Vía Aérea. Vuelo doméstico Santiago (SCL) -Temuco (ZCO)

  • Esta es obviamente la opción más rápida (1 hora aproximadamente de vuelo).  
  • Un pasaje Santiago-Temuco, ida y vuelta, puede costar alrededor de 100 USD. Si lo compras muy por encima de la fecha de viaje, el costo subirá. 
  • Recomendamos adquirir sus pasajes Santiago-Temuco (ida y vuelta) por separado de su reserva en vuelo internacional. Esto le permitirá abaratar substantivamente el costo de los pasajes Santiago-Temuco. Para ello, debe ir directamente a los sitios de las siguientes líneas aéreas locales: 

-LATAM (https://www.latamairlines.com/us/en);

-Sky Airlines (https://www.skyairline.com/en/unitedstates); o, 

-JetSMART (https://jetsmart.com/cl/es/). 

Para conectar al vuelo nacional, deberá recoger su equipaje luego de aduana y después ir al terminal para vuelos nacionales. Si compra el vuelo doméstico por separado de su vuelo internacional, es probable que este vuelo no incluya la maleta de bodega. Poner atención a esto. Asimismo, si ha comprado el vuelo Santiago-Temuco por separado y debe recoger equipaje, se recomienda tener una ventana de tiempo de 4 horas para asegurar completar todos los trámites del área internacional para los vuelos domésticos. Los vuelos internacionales llegan a la terminal 2. Debe caminar aproximadamente 10-15 minutos hasta la terminal 1, donde salen los vuelos domésticos. El trámite de aduana toma un tiempo significativo debido a la coincidencia de llegadas de muchos vuelos internacionales en ciertos horarios. 

  • Si ha comprado un paquete único de vuelo desde su lugar de origen hasta Temuco, entonces su equipaje debería estar etiquetado hasta Temuco. De todas formas, les sugerimos averiguar para asegurarse. En este caso, solo debes seguir a Conexiones Domésticas (vuelos nacionales). Será más rápido el proceso, aunque igualmente considerar unas 3 horas entre la llegada del vuelo internacional y la salida del vuelo nacional. 
  • El vuelo a Temuco llega al Aeropuerto de La Araucanía (ZCO) en Freire, localizado a 24 kilómetros al sur de Temuco. Para dirigirte al centro de Temuco o al área de Avenida Alemania puedes:
  • Utilizar un transfer compartido. Aproximadamente 30-40 minutos hasta el centro de Temuco. Precio de referencia: 8.000-13.000 pesos chilenos ($9-14 dólares americanos).
  • Utilizar taxi o transfer privado. Precio de referencia 20.000-30.000 pesos chilenos ($22-32 dólares americanos).

Opción 2: Vía Terrestre. Por bus interregional Santiago-Temuco

  • Esta es una opción más económica, pero más lenta. El bus puede demorar de 8 a 9 horas aproximadamente. 
  • Pueden revisar opciones en la siguiente web: https://www.recorrido.cl/en
  • Si de todas maneras te decides a tomar el bus, y vienes desde el aeropuerto de Santiago esto es lo que debes hacer:

-Una vez que retiraste tu equipaje y pasaste por el Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero (SAG), puedes: 

  • Salir del aeropuerto y tomar un bus de acercamiento al Terminal de Buses de Santiago (Alameda 3850, Estación Central). 
  • Los buses de acercamiento son CentroPuerto (https://www.centropuerto.cl) o Turbus Aeropuerto (https://aeropuerto.turbus.cl/#/).
  • Estos buses tienen varias paradas antes de llegar al terminal de buses. 
  • Este servicio vale 2000 pesos chilenos, 3 dolares, y puedes pagar en cash o con tarjeta. 
  • Otra opción es que desde el aeropuerto tomes un transfer o taxi hasta el terminal de buses de Santiago. Hay diferentes opciones que puedes ver justo antes de salir del aeropuerto. 

-Una vez que estés en el terminal de buses de Santiago, tendrás varias opciones para viajar en Bus, pero te recomendamos: Eme Bus, Transantin, Buses Jac, ETM, Nar Bus, Cruz del Sur. 

  • Los precios de los pasajes en bus rondean los 20.000-50.000 pesos chilenos (22-52 dólares), dependiendo si prefieres salón cama o semi-cama. Semi Cama (reclinación media, más económico); Salón Cama o Cama Premium (más reclinación y comodidad)
  • Puedes gestionar la compra de pasajes con antelación en sitios web como: recorrido.cl, kupos.cl, o puedes comprar direcamente en las páginas de los buses: Turbus, ETM, JAC, Narbus, TranSantin, Jet Sur.
  • También puedes comprar los pasajes de bus en el terminal de buses.
  • El bus llegará al Terminal Rodoviario de la Araucanía, en Vicente Pérez Rosales 1609, Temuco.
  • Desde el terminal de buses de Temuco puedes tomar un taxi o usar una aplicación como Uber para dirigirte a tu lugar de alojamiento.

Opción 3: Vía Terrestre. Por vehículo 

  • Pueden arrendar un carro en el mismo aeropuerto de Santiago. El viaje dura aproximadamente entre 6 y 8 horas. La Carretera es muy segura y está en buenas condiciones. 

SI DECIDE PASAR A SANTIAGO

  • Si por alguna razón debe o desea pasar a Santiago antes o después de la conferencia, asegure que, desde el aeropuerto (SCL) a su hotel, tome un “Taxi Oficial.” Estos servicios tienen oficinas de atención en el área de Transporte Oficial, cerca de la zona de retiro de equipajes y antes de la salida final hacia el área pública del aeropuerto. Por seguridad, no salga del área de Transporte Oficial sin haber adquirido ticket de alguna de las compañías de taxi oficial. 
  • Si reserva hotel en Santiago, recomendamos quedarse en hoteles localizados en la Comuna de Providencia, o en el Barrio Lastarria o Bellas Artes (estas últimas dos áreas son aledañas a Santiago centro), donde podrá estar en áreas seguras. Siempre consulte en su hotel acerca de protocolos de seguridad que deba seguir dentro de la ciudad, especialmente en horario nocturno. 

DATOS ADICIONALES Y CONTACTO DE COMITE LOCAL ANFITRION

  • La mayoría de las tiendas acepta tarjetas de crédito y débito. Pero te recomendamos el uso de efectivo para buses, taxis y compras en tiendas menores. 
  • En el aeropuerto de Temuco hay diversas empresas de rent a car. 
  • Asegúrense de revisar si les solicitan alguna visa para entrar a Chile, según desde qué país viajen.
