Endowed Chair in American Indian Education

The College of Education and Human Service Professions at the University of Minnesota Duluth is seeking applicants for an Endowed Chair in American Indian Education to begin August 18, 2025. This is a 9-month faculty position at Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. To be eligible to apply for a tenured position, candidates must have been awarded tenure previously, have an earned doctorate and a strong record of teaching, a substantial body of research, and service appropriate for tenure and appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
Responsibilities will include developing and teaching various courses in both graduate and undergraduate programs; implementing a strong research agenda; program development; working with local American Indian communities and providing University outreach and service. Additional responsibilities will include advising students, providing consultation with other faculty, and teaching courses in the Department of Education.

Doctorate in Education or related field from a regionally accredited university, completed by start of contract.

Deep knowledge of issues within the universe of American Indian Education and Commitment to working with diverse populations and fostering social justice.

A clearly articulated research agenda or scholarly record commensurate to faculty rank sought (Assistant, Associate of Full Professor).

Required Qualifications for Associate Professor rank with tenure: In addition to the Required qualifications above applicants who wish to be considered for Associate Professor with tenure must: Have been awarded tenure previously; earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university in Education or related field. Evidence of a substantial body of scholarship in the field of American Indian education, including documentation from authorities in the candidate’s major field verifying professional contributions to the field; at least 5 years of successful teaching experience in higher education; and demonstrated ability to work with diverse communities.
Required Qualifications for Professor rank with tenure: In addition to the criteria above for Associate Professor rank, candidates must provide evidence of national or international leadership based on research and scholarly productivity over a period of at least 10 years, including documentation from authorities in the candidate’s major field verifying professional contributions to the field. Documentation of excellence in teaching for a minimum of 10 years in higher education must be provided.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of diverse American Indian cultures, languages, tribal issues and sovereignty;
- Demonstrated service to and engagement with American Indian communities;
- A notable record of program development and scholarly production dedicated to enhancing the praxis of critical issues in American Indian education;
- Interest in or knowledge of Indigenous pedagogies reflecting diverse Native worldviews
- Successful record of acquiring grant funding to support work in American Indian Education;
- Experience teaching American Indian education content courses and other education courses;
- Experience in K-12 education;
- Interest in or experience with language revitalization;
- Demonstrated knowledge of or close affiliation with American Indian communities.
