Position Summary:

Alaska Native Studies Program invites applications for an assistant or associate tenure track professor of Alaska Native Studies. The successful candidate will help build a major in Alaska Native Studies and enhance the minor, OEC and AA degree. Alaska is the state with the highest percentage of Native Americans and the candidate would be located on the ancestral homelands of the Dena'ina Athabascan, Ahtna Athabascan, Alutiiq/Sugpiak, and Eyak peoples and immersed in a setting where the contributions of Alaska Natives are finally being recognized.

Responsibilities include teaching several sections of Alaska Native Perspectives each year and upper division courses depending on candidate specialization. Additional professional responsibilities include research, scholarship and creative activity, and service to the University, profession, and community. These responsibilities generally include advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. Candidates are asked to demonstrate evidence of a commitment to equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service.

The Alaska Native Studies is part of the College of Arts and Sciences which is the largest academic unit in the state. Students graduating with an associate degree or a baccalaureate degree from UAA are required to have both a diversity and inclusion course and an Alaska Native themed course. This is part of fulfilling mission of UAA to serve "the higher education needs of the state, its communities, and its diverse peoples." Anchorage has some of the most diverse schools in the nation and top two most diverse census tracts. While the student body does not match the diversity of the community, nearly half of UAA students are first generation. Because faculty and student success are inextricably linked the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence offers myriad training for faculty to develop their skills.

To thrive in this role the applicant should have a passion for Indigenous studies, commitment to equity in education and experience in building academic programs.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must receive a terminal degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in the department's core discipline, sub-discipline, or related field as defined by the department.

This position is located on the University of Alaska campus in Anchorage. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track, Assistant or Associate Professor faculty position.
