Position Purpose

Dartmouth College invites applicants to apply for the position of Director of the Native American Program to provide direction, leadership, and consultation in the educational, social, cultural, and personal development of Native and Indigenous students at Dartmouth through student advising and mentoring, community engagement and collaboration, and Budget Administration. Reports to the Associate Dean of Community Life and Inclusivity and serves on the Student Affairs Leadership Team.
 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelors plus 3-5 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of relevant work experience in counseling, advising, and/or mentoring students in college/university setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in student leadership development.
  • Background in developing and managing integrated support services for under-represented communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a respectful and collaborative manner with others.
  • Demonstrated success in utilizing data for planning and evaluation of programs and services.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal and departmental integrity, creativity, collaboration, initiative, multicultural education, and professionalism.
  • Excellent human relations, group leadership, and communication skills to relate effectively to all constituent groups within the Dartmouth community.
  • Excellent collaboration, listening, and interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team setting.
  • Strong administrative, counseling, and program development skills.
  • Strong conflict management and resolution skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Supervisory and/or leadership ability.

  • Success in collaborating with colleagues in developing comprehensive and integrated efforts in supporting Native American/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian/Indigenous students.
  • Proven record of successful experience responding to individual and community issues.
  • Commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse community, including intersectional identities.
 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in multicultural and social justice education and leadership development preferred.
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets.
  • Crisis management and/or on-call experience.
  • Masters degree preferred

Program Administration (40 pct of time)

  • Implements and manages co-curricular programs, initiatives, and special events that improve the academic and social success of Native and Indigenous students.
  • In collaboration with the Department of Native American and Indigenous Studies and Residential Education, serves as program advisor for the Native American House residential affinity house.
  • Celebrates Native student and community achievement and knowledge through the facilitation of the coordination of the student-run annual Dartmouth Powwow, graduation events, internships, and first-year student orientation programs.
  • Oversees the production of the Native American Program electronic communications, marketing, publications, and outreach materials.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluate Native American Program staff including the Assistant Director, Program Coordinator, Administrative Assistant, student interns, and peer advisors.
  • Works in partnership with faculty, administration, and students to develop programs (lectures, discussions, film series, etc.), which educate and support all Dartmouth students about the importance of diversity within a liberal arts education and global framework.
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of Pluralism and Leadership and the Tucker Center to provide anchors of support to historically under-represented students, campus multicultural education, leadership development, campus service, community service, and professional development.
 

Advising & Mentoring (25 pct of time)

  • Advises, mentors, and counsels students on a wide variety of academic, personal, social, cultural, career, and community concerns.
  • Monitors individual student academic performance and welfare and consults with faculty and other administrative departments to ensure student success.
  • Refers and connects students to departments and campus resources.
  • Honors the intersectional identities of students, and maintains a working knowledge of how intersectional identities affect the student experience.
  • Encourages the development and maintenance of mentorship relationships for and between Native and Indigenous students.
  • Serves as a member of the Student Affairs “Dean-on-Call” emergency response team. · Serves as an advisor to Native and Indigenous student leaders and organizations focused on the needs and concerns of Native and Indigenous students.
 

Budget Administration (15 pct of time)

  • Prepares and manages program budgets and any special funds or grants, office correspondence, annual reports, and office records.
  • In collaboration with Advancement and the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, stewards gifts and endowments designated to the Native American Program.
 

Advocacy (15 pct of time)

  • Provides consultation to organizations and opens up pathways for students’ expression of Native and Indigenous cultural identity.
  • Participates in facilitating educational programming and interventions to improve campus climate and community understanding.
  • Conducts outreach, develops initiatives and educational programming that address individual, institutional, and cultural manifestations of oppression.
 
Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others. Performs other duties as assigned.
