One Full-Time Tenure Track Faculty Position

The Department of Politics, Governance, and Economics (PGE) in the School of International Service (SIS) at American University (AU) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Economics at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 1, 2025.  

We welcome applicants who work on Applied Microeconomics, with a particular interest in the fields of Development, International Trade, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Environment, or Political Economy. 

The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about working in a multidisciplinary environment that includes political scientists, geographers, sociologists, anthropologists, economists, and international relations scholars.  Preference will be given to applicants whose work is theoretically grounded, empirically oriented, and policy relevant.  

The successful candidate will also be enthusiastic about teaching international affairs from a multidisciplinary perspective at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate will be expected to teach development economics and/or international economics, and should be willing to teach introductory economics and statistics. Willingness to mentor PhD candidates in our vibrant PhD program is also desirable.  

The faculty hire will join PGE and SIS in growing and consolidating a dynamic community of scholars working on the challenges and opportunities that economies face around the globe. The ideal candidate will strengthen research and course options in economics, and become part of multi-disciplinary and multi-regional research teams pursuing cutting edge scholarship.

Applicants should hold a PhD or the highest equivalent degree in Economics or equivalent field by the start date, though ABD applications will be considered.  The standard course load for a tenure track faculty is 2/2. All faculty are expected to hold office hours and participate in School and University activities and service.  Salary range: $95,000-$105,000.  Benefits are competitive.
