Responsibilities 
The Department of Indigenous Studies in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba invites Indigenous scholars to apply for a full-time probationary Instructor I, II or Senior Instructor beginning July 1, 2022 (or as negotiated).
The Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Manitoba is located on Treaty One territory in the traditional home of the Anishinaabe, Dakota, Lakota, and Cree and the homeland of the Métis Nation. A cultural and geographical centre, Manitoba has the largest number of Indigenous Peoples per capita of any province and Winnipeg is the country's largest Indigenous urban community in Canada. Winnipeg also has an historical relationship with the Kivalliq region of Nunavut and is home to the Manitoba Inuit Association as well as the new Qaumajuq wing at the Winnipeg Art Gallery - which will hold and exhibit the largest collection of Inuit art in the world. As a home of some of the most significant political and social events in Canadian history, it is only natural that that the University of Manitoba also is home to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation and its archival collections. As a place of learning, the University of Manitoba is home to over 31,000 students - with 2400 of them Indigenous.
For more than 46 years, the Department of Indigenous Studies at U of M has been an international leader in the field, committed to providing an excellent and diverse Indigenous education to its students, to expanding Indigenous knowledge through research, scholarship and creative activity, and to serving Indigenous, Canadian and other communities through outreach and academic service. Currently the department offers undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degrees (a 3-year General degree and a 4-year Advanced Major degree) and degrees at the Masters and PhD levels. Our areas of research expertise include: Indigenous literatures, Indigenous governance, Indigenous aesthetics, Anishinaabe studies, Indigenous feminisms, Métis studies, critical Indigenous studies, decolonization, history, education, and Indigenous languages. Qualifications 
The candidate applying for this position is required to have an MA within the field of Indigenous Studies or a closely related discipline. The candidate must have the expertise to teach the department courses NATV 1200, 1220, and 1240, which will form the bulk of the teaching load as well as a selection of 2nd and 3rd year courses commensurate to experience and expertise of the candidate. The candidate must be comfortable teaching Indigenous Content Requirement courses as the Department of Indigenous Studies provides these courses in support of the Indigenous Content Requirement for the Faculty of Arts. Department practice has been to provide TA support for large lecture sections.  The candidate must have familiarity with online teaching platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, UMLearn, or D2L. Responsibilities will consist of 80% undergraduate teaching in one or more delivery modes including in-person, and distance instruction as well as 20% service-related activities.
It is preferred that the candidate will have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and the ability to speak, read, and write competently in one of the Indigenous languages of Manitoba. The successful candidate will also have experience utilizing alternate delivery methods such as video conferencing, online learning, language labs and other distributed learning formats designed to reach local and distance learners.
